Easy A
I didn't want to like this movie. Early returns showed a flick that was
way too clever and full of itself; the all-too-pretty setting and
characters screamed "Disney movie," and all that entails; and the device
of a webcast narration looked a little too self-consciously modern and
present-day. But it all turned out for the best, paying off with a very
sharp, funny and ultimately charming work. This one earns its good
grade.

Miracle
This is close to heresy, giving this movie a MEOW. It got a lot of critical acclaim when it hit the theaters, and it's hard to go wrong with one of the most compelling athletic stories of the 20th century. And it's not like I didn't enjoy it. But the hard fact is, there are plenty of sports movie cliches in this flick, more than enough to drag it below the level of great moviemaking. And Kurt Russell's performance is strong, but if you don't remember the real Herb Brooks--the situation most viewers will be in--it's hard to say how well he captured the man. It's good, but could have been better.

Good Night, And Good Luck
Certainly the best movie I've seen this year (2005). Along with the compelling
story and excellent acting, George Clooney has fashioned a beautiful
film: lovely use of black and white cinematography, compelling shots of
light and shadow that echo the polarized story elements. And David
Strathairn's professional, restrained performance as Edward R. Murrow is
worthy of many awards. You must see this film.

The Station Agent
It's not for everyone, but if you like a film with an honest outlook and
a laconic and dry style, you will feel right at home here.
Interestingly, none of those involved really tries to make any of the
principal characters likable; they just allow them to be what they are,
and you either take it or leave it. I say take it.

Pieces Of April
Not your typical holiday movie, but that's a good thing. A lot of its
humor flies below the radar, and the climax is a little too pat, but
there are plenty of subtle and smart laughs to be had here. And, if
that's not enough for you--and you're very eye-candy conscious--please
note that no matter how tarted up she may be, Katie Holmes is still
Katie Holmes.
