What a weird movie. There's no way a film like this could be made today, and it's hard to call it a good movie, but back in the early '70s, a very self-conscious exploitation flick like this one could find a life, and it's, um, artistic sensibilities--bloody action and porno-jazz soundtrack (with corresponding story elements; be forewarned) against a backdrop of Shogun Japan--do add up to a strangely entertaining mixture, in a perverted sort of way. Watching this movie, you can see its influence on Quentin Tarantino's oeuvre, for sure, and that makes it an article of interest for anyone who has a certain bend towards filmdom in all its manifestations. See it if you're that type; anyone else can probably skip it.Tuesday, March 16, 2021
