Fury

No, I won't go for the cheap shot and say the title came from how Brad Pitt felt towards his agent after reading the script. This isn't actually a particularly bad movie, just unoriginal. There's not much story beyond a series of vignettes about the craziness and intensity of war; that wasn't good enough when it was Saving Private Ryan, it certainly isn't good enough here. At least the combat scenes are remarkably well done (and grisly), but again, we've seen that before. Not bad, just not really necessary.

Constantine

Round up the usual apocalypse. Another bit of cinematic hokum, one that delivers lots of action and a fine sense of visual style to go along with a keen eye for the dirty gray areas between good and evil. The comic book panache more than makes up for Keanu Reeves's "unique" screen presence, and the lack of particularly big plot holes is a welcome change from what you usually get from these kinds of movies. Mix it together and you get a flick that's well done and fun.

Holes

A movie that tries to cover an awful lot of ground. It seems at first like it's bound to fail, but the threads of this artfully constructed story come together in the end for a nice payoff. There's a disquieting note that runs just below the surface--a flicker on the bullshit meter regarding how a young man really would react to such injustice--but it remains buried deep enough that it doesn't spoil the fun. Definitely worth a look.
