Pinocchio

The storytelling at times is cloying. The narrative is somewhat disjointed (possibly more Collodi's fault than Disney’s). Yet, this movie merits a truly loud PURR. Why? The animation, all hand-drawn, is spectacularly beautiful--especially the backgrounds, where seemingly no attention to detail is missed. And this coming in what was just the second of Disney’s full-length features. It’s a remarkable achievement. (Note, too, that I watched this not long after seeing The Little Mermaid. Both films have substantial underwater sequences, and the earlier movie did it better. Disney's mid-'80s bottom-out was as much a technical fault as well as a leadership void.) Well worth the time to view--and I do mean VIEW--this one.
