It's like looking at a visual encyclopedia of science fiction cinema. I don't know if every sci-fi motif we see here is original to this work--probably not--or springs from earlier sources, but this film seems to be where the template was firmly established as canon. Given that, it is something of a treat to see this movie at a distance of some sixty years from its release; it has lots of nostalgia value, yet also comes across as weirdly fresh and admirably creative in its presentation. Yes, some of the effects are cheesy, but other visuals are quite good, especially considering the limitations of the time. And some interesting ideas undergird the plot and whole sense of the thing. Bottom line: it's a treat to watch and not to be missed by any fan of classic science fiction.
