The key takeaway here seems to be: Americans have been willing, able, and even eager to betray the nation’s principles for a long time, for whatever is the expedient of the day. Or maybe that’s just me viewing it through my jaundiced eyes. Thankfully, the other side of the coin shows that there are occasional heroes--real heroes, not the facile elevation of anyone in a uniform--like Tom Hanks’ character, lawyer Jim Donovan, who understand that doing what’s right--and, indeed, American--can lead to greater rewards down the road, regardless of the personal cost in the moment. That makes this a worthy film to watch, so that, hopefully, everyone can get that message loud and clear.
