The problem here seems to be one of currency. As in, the classic literary characters depicted here are, actually, "classic"--which is to say, of works of literature that are not generally read today. Most modern movie goers would probably need the provenance of these characters explained to them, and that's not a good foundation when it comes to a movie making contact with its audience. Given that problem, most viewers going in will have little cause to care about these people. Other flaws don't help; nonsensical plot points, heroes who seem to cause more destruction than they prevent (a common sight in hero flicks these days), and a general lack of star power all undermine the effort. (Plus, this may go down as the film that ended Sean Connery's career.) it's not awful--at the very least, the film looks good--but it falls far below the mark.
